Bear baiting is a major component of the bear hound hunting culture in Wisconsin (see "Bear
Baiting" fact sheet and "Bear Hounds" link).
Bears are not the only animals that become habituated to bait; Wisconsin's Wolves do as well. For 3-1/2 months of the year (hound dog training & hunting) baiting leads to violent
dogfighting between hound dogs and wolves. Hound dogs are run off of bait sites during training (7/1-8/31) as well as hunting. Wolves are moving their young to rendezvous sites at this time
and will defend their young to the death: It is dogfighting and both dogs and wolves die.
